I was contracted to build an identity for the craft leather business Shrike Premium Handmade Leather. The owner didn't know exactly what kind of logo he was looking for but noted that he liked a darker look/feel (hence the shrike name) and liked old west style fonts.
I selected a contemporary sans serif with a western flare and began the process. Knowing that the mark would be transferred onto leather surfaces via a literal brand I know the design needed to be relatively simple while incorporating enough elements to build a narrative richness and sense of authenticity.
I created a vector trace of a shrike bird and cleaned it up into a simplified form. To further emphasize the shrike concept and play into the piercing/needle techniques involved in leather work I puppet warped a string of thorn vines into a roundel form. The design was completed with an arc effect on the brand name and subheadings.
